What to expect

What to expect from therapy

Therapy works best when you know what's happening and why. Here's what the process looks like, and what you can expect from working together.

  1. 01

    Getting in touch

After your initial enquiry, we'll arrange a time that works for you. If you'd like to use a Medicare rebate, you can speak with your GP about a Mental Health Care Plan beforehand.

  2. 02

    Your first session

The first session is about understanding what brings you in — your current concerns, relevant history and what you'd like to get out of therapy. There's no pressure to share more than you're ready to.

  3. 03

    A plan, shaped together

From there we'll agree on a focus and approach. Treatment is collaborative: you'll always know what we're working on and why.

  4. 04

    Ongoing therapy

Sessions typically run for 50 minutes. Frequency depends on what you're working through — many people start weekly or fortnightly and adjust over time.

Confidentiality

What you share in session is held in confidence. As a registered psychologist, Ruth follows the ethical and legal frameworks set out by the Australian Psychological Society and the relevant Medicare and privacy legislation. Any limits to confidentiality are explained clearly at the outset.
